What is the UNITY Drama Program?
Drama is UNITY’s preparatory theater program where students dive into the fundamentals of acting, storytelling, and stagecraft. Unlike traditional drama courses, our program bridges both classical European traditions and African-American storytelling, giving students a rich and unique foundation in the performing arts.
Over five weeks, students learn the essentials of theater history, acting techniques, scriptwriting, and stage design while gaining the confidence to perform with power and purpose. We believe theater is more than performance—it’s a training ground for communication, creativity, leadership, and self-expression. By the end, students are ready to step into future productions with the skills to succeed on stage and beyond.
What we offer youth in the Drama Program
Character Building and Confidence – Theater teaches courage, discipline, and presence. Students learn to speak with confidence, collaborate with others, and express themselves clearly—skills that translate far beyond the stage.
Developing Natural Artistic Talents – Whether a student dreams of acting, directing, or writing, this program provides a safe space to explore and grow. From improvisation to script creation, students discover their creative voice and practice bringing characters and stories to life.
Hands-On Theater Experience – Youth gain real stage experience in acting, directing, and technical theater, including stage design, lighting, and props. They’ll also work on original monologues, scenes, and short plays to showcase their skills.
Exposure and Opportunities – Students have the chance to perform in a culminating showcase, applying everything they’ve learned. Guest speakers and theater professionals may also visit to inspire and share their expertise, giving participants a glimpse into the wider world of drama.
Drama Showcase Performance
At the end of the program, students will present a live performance that highlights their growth in acting, directing, and stagecraft. This showcase is an exciting opportunity for family, friends, and the community to celebrate their hard work and artistic achievements.
